Pensions in the Corporate Sector
Experience of the United Kingdom, United States, Germany
and Japan
E. Philip Davis
ABSTRACT
The widespread didfficulties being faced by pay-as-you-go social security
pension schemes in the light of the ageing of the population put an increased
emphasis on funding of pensions as an alternative means of financing and
provision. In this context, the article analyses issues raised by occupational
and corporate pensions. It examines the determinants of the size of company
pension sectors and reviews issues relating to the impact of company pensions
on the wider economy including regulatory issues. The paper also reviews
the possible strains that company pensions could face in the future with the
analysis focusing on the US, Germany, the UK and Japan.
